Get ready for trick-or-treating with free mask-making events at several Whatcom Council Library System locations as Halloween approaches.

Among the first of the programs is this weekend at the Everson Public Library with Evie Harman, youth focus assistant. It’s from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday. Oct. 10, at 104 Kirsch Drive.

Harman said each county library branch conducts its own program, but they’re all similar. Libraries provide the supplies such as paper, glue and glitter, and have helpers to offer technical expertise and encourage creativity.

“We read a story — usually with a Halloween theme — and then supplies galore,” Harman said. “We’ve had really fun masks over the years, some amazing and creative ones.”

She recalled a mask with an origami-themed design from several years ago that was particularly impressive.

“We had a beautiful musk ox, that they folded and cut,” she said.

As for Halloween-oriented stories, Harman recommends the fun new book “From Apple Trees to Cider, Please!” by Felicia Sanzari Chernesky and illustrated by Julia Patton, which she’ll be reading for the program Saturday.

“It reads just like a picture book, but it’s nonfiction,” she said.
