The poll had only two local restaurant options in Whatcom County, giving readers a difficult choice between Sirena Gelato and Chocolate Necessities & Gelato. The unscientific poll received 115 votes.

Sirena Gelato received 79 votes, or 69% of the total, to top the list of the best gelato shop in Whatcom County.
Sirena Gelato is a family-owned business that started in 2005, when the first location opened in Fairhaven. Since then, the sweet gelato shop opened a second location in Kirkland.
“Keeping with tradition, our gelato is made with milk instead of heavy cream, resulting in less fat and calories than traditional ice cream. Gelato also contains less air content than ice cream and is not frozen as deeply, resulting in a denser texture,” the business’ website states.
The shop has a wide variety of flavors like coffee, Dutch chocolate, Thai coconut, sea salt caramel, pistachio and more.
Sirena Gelato is also popular online, receiving a 4.7-star rating from 114 Yelp reviews, and a 4.7-star rating from 415 Google reviews.
Sirena Gelato is open from noon to 9 p.m. daily and is at 960 Harris Avenue in Bellingham.
Chocolate Necessities and Gelato received 36 votes in the reader poll.
The chocolate shop is known for its handmade artisan chocolates and truffles, as well as its gelato offerings.
Chocolate Necessities and Gelato has two locations in Bellingham. The downtown Bellingham location is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and is at 1408 Commercial St.
The second location is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is at 4600 Guide Meridian.
