New doughnut shop a big hit on first day in downtown Bellingham
The return of a doughnut shop to downtown Bellingham turned out to be a nice early Christmas present for most of those who got up early to try it out.
JoJoe’s Doughnuts opened at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 22, and — after selling hundreds of doughnuts — were sold out by 8:45 a.m., according to Joseph Letourneau, who owns the business with JoAnne Dutton. The doughnut shop is at 1301 Commercial St., near the Commercial Street Parking Garage.
Letourneau said customers were kind, encouraging and patient for the first day. One of the customers purchased some of the last available doughnuts and proceeded to share them with the children in line that were not going to get any because of the shop selling out.
“This is what makes Bellingham so truly special,” Letourneau said.
Calling itself an upscale doughnut shop with a gourmet twist, the shop also offers cinnamon buns and gluten-free options. While there are several dessert and bakery places in the downtown district, there hasn’t been a doughnut shop in the district since Rocket Donuts closed in 2019.
Now that it is open, hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, unless they sell out beforehand. Details can be found on the Jo Joe’s Doughnuts website.
