A Bellingham woman was killed early Sunday morning, Jan. 24, in a head-on crash that critically injured her passenger on East Smith Road just east of Guide Meridian.
According to a Washington State Patrol report, Charlene E.Wilbur, 53, was driving a black 2001 Subaru Legacy that drifted across the center line about 2:20 a.m. Sunday on eastbound East Smith Road, striking a westbound white 1999 Dodge Ram driven by Ryan J. Verhaaren, 24, of Bellingham.
Wilbur died at the scene. Drugs or alcohol are suspected in the wreck, but no charges are being filed.
Verhaaren, who was wearing a seat belt, was driven by a family member to St. Joseph's hospital for treatment. No information was available on his injuries, but he was not listed as a hospital patient.
Also injured was Wilbur's passenger, Brandon E. Lumbert of Bellingham. Lumbert was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph's, where he remained in critical condition Sunday, according to a hospital nursing supervisor.
Neither Wilbur or Lumbert were wearing their seat belts, according to the crash report. Both vehicles were demolished and towed.
