Fire destroys ‘generations’ of cars and boats in outbuilding near Bellingham
“Generations” of cars, boats and tools stored inside a Whatcom County outbuilding were destroyed be a fire northwest of Bellingham Wednesday night.
Bellingham Fire Department crews were called at 9:24 p.m. Nov. 10 to the 1600 block of Shady Lane Road for the report of a residential fire, according to the PulsePoint app.
Firefighters arrived to find the outbuilding already being consumed by flames, spokesperson Dustin Michaelis told The Bellingham Herald, and a lack of fire hydrants in the area hampered efforts to fight the fire.
Michaelis said crews and tender trucks from elsewhere in the county were called to help fight the fire.
Fortunately, nobody was inside the building at the time of the fire, Michaelis said, and there were no injuries in the fire.
Firefighters were able to keep enough water on a Camaro to help save it from the flames, Michaelis said.
“There were a lot of items around the building that we just couldn’t save,” Michaelis said, adding the firefighters remained on scene until approximately 2 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11. “There were generations of cars, boats and tools the family had collected over the years.”
Whatcom County fire investigators have not been able to determine a cause of the fire, as Michaelis said the building was a “total loss,” and a total value of what was lost was not yet known.
