One person seriously injured; RV and vehicle destroyed in Sunday fire near Ferndale
One person was seriously injured and an RV and vehicle were destroyed in a Sunday afternoon fire west of Ferndale.
Crews from Fire District 7 in Ferndale were called to the 6600 block of Kickerville Road shortly before 4 p.m. on Dec. 1 for the report of a recreational vehicle on fire, according to Fire District 7 Division Chief Ben Boyko. While crews were en route, they received an update that the fire possibly spread to a nearby house, Boyko said.
When crews arrived on scene, they found a fully involved RV, a fully involved vehicle next to the RV and the exterior of a nearby house on fire, Boyko said. A second RV near the first had not yet caught fire, Boyko said.
Fire and medical personnel found one patient out on the road. They were taken to St. Joseph hospital for potential burn and inhalation injuries, Boyko said. An update on the person’s condition was not immediately available Monday.
While crews were fighting the fire, multiple explosions occurred inside the RV due to medical oxygen tanks inside, Boyko said, but no other injuries were reported. One cat is unaccounted for, he said.
The RV and vehicle nearby were complete losses, with damage estimated between $30,000 and $50,000, Boyko said.
The house was saved, as only the outside of the wall caught fire, Boyko said. Because crews responded quickly, they were able to save the structure and keep the fire from spreading to the rest of the house, he said.
Crews from North Whatcom Fire and Rescue and South Whatcom Fire Authority assisted.
The cause is still undetermined, Boyko said.
