Sports Blog: Softball power rankings

About a month into the season and the picture of contenders is starting to form. Here’s how it looks now:

1. Lynden (9-1, 3-0 Northwest Conference) -- The Lions only loss came in the season-opener to Ferndale, but they rebounded with a 2-0 win over the Golden Eagles in their most recent game. Season-opening rank: 3

2. Ferndale (7-1, 2-1) -- If Lynden is No. 1, Ferndale is not far behind. The only loss is to Lynden and there’s plenty of talent here. Season-opening rank: 1

3. Sehome (7-3, 3-0) -- After the top two, things start to really equal out. The Mariners get the nod for the No. 3 despite splitting with Burlington-Edison and Mount Baker. Season-opening rank: 7

4. Burlington-Edison (2-2, 1-1) -- There’s not a large sample size for the Tigers, but they split with Sehome and were the No. 2 team in my initial power rankings. Season-opening rank: 2

5. Nooksack Valley (6-0, 3-0) -- Opening the season on a run like this is always big even if it hasn’t come against the stiffest competition. A win over Baker is a good sign that this can be sustained though. Season-opening rank: 9

6. Mount Baker (8-2, 2-1) -- The Mountaineers absolutely raked during their trip over the mountains. This team is talented but had a couple slip-ups against some tough competition. Season-opening rank: 4

7. Anacortes (5-3, 1-0) -- It’s hard to judge this team with so many out-of-conference opponents on the schedule early in the season but an 8-6 win over Burlington-Edison is a positive. Season-opening rank: 5

8. Sedro-Woolley (1-4, 0-1) -- One win in five games isn’t great but a one-run loss to Ferndale, a one-run loss to Mount Baker and a three-run loss to Anacortes shows this team has a lot of fight. Season-opening rank: 8

9. Blaine (1-4, 1-2) -- The Borderites won the game they were supposed to and faced superior competition in the other four games — two against Lynden and two against Nooksack Valley. It’s too early to tell with Blaine. Season-opening rank: 6

10. Bellingham (5-4, 0-3) -- Five wins for the Red Raiders is such a huge improvement from prior years but this team can go even higher. Don’t underestimate Bellingham. Season-opening rank: 12

11. Lynden Christian (1-3, 0-2) -- Another team with a rough start to the season, but blame the scheduler. Games against Lynden, Ferndale and Sehome aren’t the way to get a high number in the win column. Season-opening rank: 10

12. Squalicum (2-7, 0-3) -- Two wins in a week and then a near-win the following week for a team that went without a win last season is a great sight to see. Now, the tough conference schedule comes. Season-opening rank: 13

13. Meridian (1-7, 0-2) -- It’s really a toss-up between Squalicum and Meridian. The teams split the two times they faced off. But it’s probably not the way new coach Megan Monaghan wanted to start. Season-opening rank: 11
