Alex Morgan scored the go-ahead goal in the United States Women’s National Team’s semifinal match with England at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Lyon, France.

The Boston Tea Party was a key event in the United States fight for independence with Great Britain, and Morgan’s celebration came in the semifinal of the WWC against England as it gave the U.S. a 2-1 victory.

Morgan scored the game-winner on her 30th birthday. She became the first player to score on their birthday in Women’s World Cup history. It was also her sixth goal of the 2019 WWC, her first since a five-goal game against Thailand to open group play.
Earlier in the match, Christen Press scored in the 10th minute, filling in for Megan Rapinoe, who had a hamstring injury according to multiple reports. The USWNT has scored inside the first 12 minutes in every match of the 2019 WWC.
Ellen White scored in the 19th minute to give her the lead in the golden boot race and tie the game at 1-1.
It was White’s sixth goal of the tournament. Then Morgan smacked in her sixth goal off Lindsey Horan’s cross in the 31st minute.
Former England player Lianne Sanderson didn’t like the celebration during BeIN Sport’s broadcast. She’s an analyst for the 2019 WWC and called the celebration distasteful.
In addition to the Boston Tea Party reference, tea is a popular drink choice for the English.
Morgan wasn’t the only hero of the match.
Alyssa Naeher, who was shaky in allowing Spain to score a goal in the Round of 16, made a game-saving penalty in the 83rd minute. That came after White had a goal ruled offside through VAR (video assistant referee).
VAR came into play with giving England a penalty, but captain Steph Houghton had it saved by Naeher. Millie Bright picked up her second yellow card and was sent off a few minutes later, and England was down to 10 players as the U.S. grinded out the victory at the end.
The U.S. plays the Netherlands or Sweden in Sunday’s final. That semifinal between the Dutch and Swedes play Wednesday. England goes to Saturday’s third-place match for the second-straight Women’s World Cup.
