Young steelhead from halted plants bolster lake fishing anyway

Young hatchery-born steelhead that the state fish and wildlife department was ordered by a federal court to withhold from release into Puget Sound streams back in May will serve a good purpose after all.

From now through the end of November 47 lakes through out Western Washington including Fazon Lake here in Whatcom County will have rainbow trout added including these steelhead running at 11-13 inch range.

As an added bonus, on a select few of these waters receiving significant doses of these fall plants the normal daily take-home of five trout is being upped to a limit of 10 per day.

With just 1,500 'rainbows' going into Fazon, it will NOT be one whose bag limit is boosted. However, Cranberry Lake on Whidbey Island in Island County at Deception Pass State Park has been converted to a trout bonus lake.

The one caveat governing state managers in these releases is that the young steelhead must be put into public waters from which they cannot physically escape.
