Birch Bay Village to honor resident’s centennial with golf event

Birch Bay Village Golf Club will host a golf tournament on April 23 to celebrate the 100th birthday of longtime resident Rex Willis, according to a press release. Willis is expected to play in the tournament.

Willis was born in Sugar Lake, Mo., in 1916 and went on to a 37-year career with Trans World Airlines, where he became the chief meteorologist and advised Howard Hughes before his flights. He retired and moved to Birch Bay Village in 1978.

He began playing golf at 23 and still averages about 75 rounds per year on the course.

The tournament is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and be followed by a birthday luncheon at 2 p.m.
