Ferndale fifth-grade basketball team wins state title in Spokane

The Ferndale Fifth Grade AAU girls’ basketball team won the Gold Division state title at the Washington Middle School Basketball Association Tournament on Sunday, March 13, at the Spokane Convention Center.

Ferndale beat Tahoma 26-20 in the championship game after topping the South Kitsap Lady Gators 36-18 on Friday, March 11, beating the Skyline Silver 25-19 on Saturday, March 12, and losing to Marysville Select 29-25 on Saturday.

The team was coached by Carl and Sharon Neal, with assistants Stephanie Butenschoen and James Ochoa. Team members included Paige Birdsell, Ellie Ochoa, Avery Neal, Payton Akers, Madisyn Butenschoen, Cailyn Kessen, Summer Jordan, Tatum Fox, Kenna Hickok, Ashley Lang and Katrin Hempler-Fay.

The Bellingham Regulators also advanced to the state championship game in the Girls’ Sixth Grade Silver division before they fell 46-34 to the Hazen Select. The Ferndale Sixth Grade team also placed second in the Gold Division at the tournament.
