Basketball officials needed for upcoming season

Anyone interested in officiating boys’ and girls’ basketball games are invited to attend a meeting Sunday, Oct. 18, in Mount Vernon.

The Northwest Board is seeking members to referee high school and middle school boys’ and girls’ basketball games. The NWB now provides officials for both boys’ and girls’ games in Whatcom, Skagit, Island and San Juan counties since the organization previously handling boys games has dissolved. Members may choose to officiate boys, girls or both.

“High school basketball needs men and women, ranging from college students to retirees, who will help us enhance the quality of play while supplementing their income,” Ron Van Soest, NWB president, said in a news release. “All new officials receive training and mentoring.”

Training classes for new officials and returning members start at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at LaVenture Middle School, 1200 LaVenture Road, Mount Vernon. The high school season starts Nov. 30 and concludes with state tournaments March 3-5. For more information, call Steve Somers at 360-815-1399 about boys officiating or Brian Lindgren at 360-720-4865 about girls officiating or visit
