With less than a week remaining in the West Coast League season, the Bellingham Bells’ lead atop the West division has narrowed to 3 1/2 games after the Bells fell 3-1 to Cowlitz on Tuesday, Aug. 4, in Longview.
Zach Johnson threw an efficient six innings on the bump for Bellingham, allowing only two runs and three hits but was the tough-luck loser as the Bells only mustered one run in seven innings off Chris Castellanos, who struck out eight.
Dustin Breshears drove in the only run for the Bells, bringing in Ethan Paul with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
The Bells face Cowlitz for the second game of the three-game series Wednesday, Aug. 5. Second-place Victoria will be pitted against the Bells for a three-game series in a potential race for the division title that starts Friday, Aug. 7, at Joe Martin Field.
