5 local athletes win eight gold medals in USATF track event

Five Bellingham athletes combined for a total of eight first-place medals at the 2015 USATF National Masters Track & Field Championship on July 23-26 in Jacksonville, Fla.

Daphne Sluys (women’s 55-59 division) won gold in the 100 (13.97 seconds) the 200 (29.32) and the 400 (1:08.15).

Steve Kemp (men’s 60-64) took first in the pentathlon with 3,266 points. Kemp was third in the 1,500 (6:02.93), first in the discus (39-12 meters), second in the 200 (28.89), second in the javelin (36-65), and second in the long jump (4-43).

Dena Birade (women’s 40-44) won gold in the 100 (12.32) and 200 (25.83); Laurent Birade (men’s 45-49) won the 400 hurdles (59.83); and Scott Rick (men’s 50-54) won the high jump (1-75).
