Bellingham’s Jake Koppenberg qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championships by winning medalist honors at a sectional qualifier Monday, July 20, at TimberStone Golf Course in Caldwell, Idaho.

Koppenberg, who set the Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s top two yearly average scoring average marks while at Western Washington University in 2008 and 2009, shot rounds of 2-under 69 and 4-under 67 at the qualifier. His total of 136 was 1 stroke better than Hunter Ostrom of Eagle, Idaho, and Henry Lee of Coquitlam, B.C., to earn the only qualifying spot out of the sectional.
