Mariners reach deals with pitcher Logan Gilbert, six other players
With Major League Baseball’s deadline to reach 2024 salary agreements for arbitration-eligible players on Thursday afternoon, the Mariners agreed to terms with all seven of the arbitration-eligible players on their 40-man roster.
The list of players agreeing to contracts:
Ty France, first base: While some thought he could be a non-tender candidate, the Mariners first baseman will earn $6.775 million for the 2024 season in his second year of arbitration eligibility. France made $4.1 million last season.
Logan Gilbert, right-handed pitcher: He earned Super 2 status, meaning that after two years of service time he gets four years of arbitration eligiblilty – one more than the standard three. Gilbert and the Mariners settled on a $4.05 million salary for 2024. If he continues to put up similar numbers, he should double that figure for 2025.
Sam Haggerty, utility player: In his first year of arbitration eligibility, the versatile utility player will make $900,000 in 2024, a slight raise from the league minimum of $750,000.
Josh Rojas, infielder: Acquired from the Diamondbacks at the trade deadline in 2023 and expected to be a part of a platoon with Dylan Moore at second base, Rojas will earn $3.1 million in 2024 in his second year of arbitration eligibility. He also earned Super 2 status while playing with Arizona, meaning he has two more years of arbitration eligibility.
Trent Thornton, right-handed pitcher: The veteran reliever, who was picked up from the Blue Jays during the 2023 season, will earn $1.2 million in his third year of arbitration eligibility. He was also a Super 2 qualifier and has one more year of arbitration eligibility.
Justin Topa, right-handed pitcher: The veteran right-hander had a breakout season in the Mariners’ bullpen after being acquired in an offseason trade. He agreed upon a $1.25 million salary in his first year of arbitration eligibility.
Luis Urias, infielder: A definite non-tender possibility with the Red Sox, which would have made him a free agent, the Mariners acquired him in a trade just before that deadline before he could test the open market. In his third year of arbitration eligibility, Urias will earn $5 million in 2024, which is a slight raise after an injury-riddled 2023 where he earned $4.7 million. He is also a Super 2 player and will be arbitration eligible in 2025.
