Lynnwood’s scoring duo too much for Ferndale

Nikita Leonovets made nine saves in the first half but couldn’t hold Lynnwood scoreless as Ferndale lost 2-0 in its Class 3A District Tournament first round match on Saturday, May 7, at Edmonds Stadium.

Leonovets ended the day with 16 saves on 25 shots and while he was able to surpress Lynnwood’s attacking offense in the first half, the duo of Dane Evanger and Ryley Johnson were too much for Ferndale’s defense.

Evanger scored first in the 46th minute and Johnson followed his lead with a run to the corner and a left-footed strike to make the score 2-0 in the 68th minute.

“We were planning to keep the ball away from those two because they’ve been the main source of (Lynnwood’s) goals,” coach Rigel Weis said in a phone interview. “As a pairing they are very dangerous so we tried to prevent passes to them.”

Ferndale was successful in the first half but in the second Evanger’s early goal forced the Golden Eagles’ offense to push forward which allowed for the second goal.
