Lynden Christian drops district opener in double overtime
After 87 minutes of scoreless soccer, Lynden Christian finally allowed a goal in its 1-0 Class 1A Northwest District Tournament first round loss to South Whidbey on Monday, May 2, at Whatcom Community College.
A scoreless five-minute overtime period necessitated another five-minute frame, and in the second minute, South Whidbey’s Graham Colar booted a ball into the back of the net on an assist by Lucas Lieberman to end the game.
“We had our chances but we didn’t do our job,” Lyncs coach Brent De Ruyter said. “A bounce here and a bounce there and it could have been different. Now we have to work on cleaning things up.”
Turning point of the game
It wasn’t until the second minute of the second sudden-death overtime period that anybody found the back of the net. Unfortunately for Lynden Christian, it was scored against them.
The Lyncs’ defense allowed Leiberman to get through a double team and play the ball back across the middle, where Graham Colar slotted it in.
