Red Raiders shut out Mountaineers in boys’ soccer

The Bellingham boys’ soccer team scored twice in the second half to earn a 2-0 Northwest Conference victory over Mount Baker on Monday, March 28, at Northwest Fields.

“Mount Baker was really hard to break down, especially in the first half,” Bellingham coach Matt Zigulis said in a phone interview, “and came with a lot of energy so it was definitly a good game.”

Eduardo Canales scored in the 45th minute off an assist by Kellen Smith and Spencer Sumpter scored in the 54th minute off an assist by Jack Lewis-Clark.

Zigulis said defense was key.

“It was a good battle. In the first half both teams had good looks at goals,” Zigulis said. “It definitly was good to get our second shutout in a row so credit goes to our keeper (Joe Worley) and our defense.”
