Call them the ‘queens of elimination.’

Over the past four seasons, Squalicum’s girls’ soccer team has been the eviction notice to teams in elimination games.

That trend continued Saturday, Nov. 14, at Civic Stadium.

I’d like to know of another team that’s been quite that successful

Squalicum coach David Kish

Squalicum ended Black Hills’ season with a 6-0 Class 2A State Tournament quarterfinal win, making the Storm 8-0 in loser-out contests the past four years while outscoring opponents 31-3 in those games.

The win sealed the Storm’s fourth straight semifinal appearance, where it will face Liberty on Friday, Nov. 20, at Shoreline Stadium.

“I’d like to know of another team that’s been quite that successful,” Storm coach David Kish said after the win. “It’s the hard work they (the four-year seniors) put in, not just the three months I have them, but they play soccer year round. They’re working hard constantly, fighting through injuries because they want to win and they want to battle. They impress me everyday.”

Those seniors were again the backbone of the Storm’s 29th straight victory.

Rachel Dorr scored a goal — a 40-yard beauty of a free kick — and two assists, Kim Hazlett scored twice and Kim Dorr scored a goal and got an assist.

The Storm got on the board in the eighth minute when Hazlett beat a Black Hills defender to a flick-on header from Kim Dorr. The Storm’s leading scorer then turned and fired it past Wolves’ goalie Jordan Westby to make it 1-0.

Kim Dorr sent the Storm to the lockers with a 2-0 lead, when she found herself wide open with just the goalkeeper to beat in the 25th minute.

But Squalicum wasn’t going to settle.

“Kim Hazlett started off in the locker room talking about not being complacent,” Kish said. “We’ve scored pretty quickly and sometimes easily and we let down. We start playing down to our opponent or we just stop playing our game. So we put a challenge out there to start the second half even better than we did the first.”

And it worked.

Three minutes into the second half, Hazlett used a spin move to get around a defender and took a shot that forced Westby to make a great save.

On the ensuing corner kick, junior midfielder Catelyn Stevenson got her foot on the Rachel Dorr ball and it snuck inside the post to make it 3-0. It was Stevenson’s first goal of the season.

“My reaction was ‘I scored! I scored!” Stevenson excitedly explained. “I never score as a midfielder because I used to be a defender and so it’s just like so rare and it just felt so good.”

Hazlett scored her second goal of the afternoon and 33rd of the season just minutes later before Rachel Dorr’s free kick goal in the 60th minute and Amanda Wells’ 77th-minute goal closed it out.

With Liberty on Friday, the Storm is hoping the momentum carries over.

“I think they’re going to be a good side. We’re a good side. I think it’s going to be a great game,” Kish said. “I think it’s going to be the deciding game. One of these two teams will have at it. It’s going to be good. It’s going to be fun.”
