Coach: Brent De Ruyter
Last year: Went 6-10-5 overall and 3-7-2 in the Northwest Conference (ninth). ... Scored 35 goals, led by Haley Hollander’s 14, while conceding 48 goals. ... Went 1-2 in the Class 1A District Tournament, where two of their games went to shootouts, the second being a season-ending loss to Mount Baker.
Players to watch: Haley Hollander (M, Sr.), Shaye Brandsma (M/F, Sr.), Karibeth Engelsma (GK, Sr.)
Outlook: After getting shocked by Mount Baker in the district tournament last season, the Lyncs are more than ready to get back on the field. That loss has already been talked about and put behind them and now the Lyncs look poised for a successful season, after having their largest turnout in the program’s history. “We’re really pleased with the progress,” coach Brent De Ruyter said in a phone interview. “We also have great buy-in from the kids.” While Lynden Christian struggled to score at times last year, the offense should be the strength this season. Leading goalscorer Haley Hollander and Shaye Brandsma, who scored six times last season, both will pioneer the offense. “We see those two as confident returning seniors, really raising their level of play,” De Ruyter said. The key for the Lyncs, though, rests with the defense. All three graduated seniors were defenders, and the Lyncs will be searching for replacements. Karibeth Engelsma, who impressed in net last season, will provide some strength while the Lyncs find those new starters.
