Last year: Went 11-6-3 overall and 8-1-3 in the Northwest Conference (fourth). ... Scored 57 goals, led by Devin Grahn’s 11, and allowed only 29, helped by a strong year by goalie Nicole Carlson. ... Went undefeated in the last seven contests of the regular season to make district tournament. ... Topped Bellingham to make the state playoffs, where they lost to Liberty 3-1.
Players to watch: Abby Webster (Sr., F/M), Bryce Sherif (Sr., D), Nicole Carlson (Jr., GK), Andrea Zucchi (Sr., M/F)
Outlook: The Mariners may be the team to beat in the Northwest Conference this season. While Squalicum certainly may hold that honor, the Mariners will compete for the title all season. They return most of the core, although did lose leading scorer Devin Grahn for the season after she tore her ACL last spring, and have a ton of depth. “I think I have good depth in all my positions really,” coach Andria Fountain said. “I have a really strong bench too, which makes my life hard.” That’s definitely not a bad problem to have. The Mariners once again will take the committee approach to scoring goals, with Abby Webster, Andrea Zucchi and Lyla Pagnotta all likely playing large roles. Where the strength lies, however, is on the back end. Led by goalkeeper Nicole Carlson and defender Bryce Sherif, the Mariners boast probably the best defense in the NWC.
