Coach: Jason Jorgensen
Last year: Went 4-14-2 overall and 3-9-0 in the Northwest Conference (10th). ... All three conference wins came in a row, as the Mountaineers put up three-game win streak toward end of season. ... Scored a league-worst 18 goals while allowing 95. ... Made the Class 1A Bi-District Tournament by topping Lynden Christian in a shootout, but lost to Bear Creek 10-0 to end season.
Players to watch: Emily Brandland (GK, Sr.), Jensen Bertrand (D, Sr.), Molly Lynch (D, Jr.), Taylor VanBrocklin (F, Sr.)
Outlook: The Mountaineers return as a younger team, but with several key pieces in place. Taking over the net is Emily Brandland, who returns after a year on the volleyball court, and will anchor a defense that also includes defenders Jensen Bertrand and Molly Lynch. Up top is Taylor VanBrocklin, who tallied two goals last season and will be the go-to scorer for the Mountaineers. The Mata girls — Gabby and Michelle — also return in the center of the field. “I’d say the strength is the cohesiveness they have as a unit. They love being out there on the field and enjoy each others’ company,” coach Jason Jorgensen said in a phone interview of his team. “That’s a strong point. ... They’re also all hardworkers.” While Mount Baker might not be the favorite to lead the 1A teams in the NWC, that’s the goal the girls have set, and after topping Lynden Christian last year, they’ve shown they’re apt to surprise.
