Coach: Terri Tigert
Last year: Under first-year coach Terri Tigert, went 11-7-2 overall and 6-4-2 in the Northwest Conference (sixth). ... Scored 60 goals, led by forwards Payton Lunde and Janessa Murphy (12 goals), and allowed 34 tallies. ... Qualified for the Class 1A State Tournament and topped Seattle Christian 3-1 before falling to King’s for the second time in the postseason.
Players to watch: Payton Lunde (F, Jr.), Ryley Zapien (M, Jr.), Sydney Gospodinovich (GK, Jr), Emily Brackinreed (F, Jr.), Emily Kooiman (D, Jr.)
Outlook: Terri Tigert’s second year heading the Meridian Trojans feels a lot more comfortable, she said in a phone interview. “I feel a lot more organized. I know what they’re looking for, and what they want from me as coach,” she said. “The first year was a learning experience and now it’s going a lot smoother.” Of course, Tigert’s first year didn’t come without success. The Trojans made the state playoffs and aim to get back again this season. “It’s always going to be in the back of our minds,” Tigert said. Meridian lost talent in Emily Schwisow, Janessa Murphy and Lexi McKinnon but speedy forward Payton Lunde, who scored 12 goals last season, and midfield stud Ryley Zapien, who is playing better than ever, Tigert said, are back. Mikayla Pimento, Emily Brackinreed and Bryn Magnusson should all play big parts of the offense, while talented goalkeeper Sydney Gospodinovich mans the net with Emily Kooiman, who was solid in the back last season, in front of her.
