Coach: Carlos Melendez
Last year: Went 6-5-5 overall under first-year coach Carlos Melendez and 4-4-3 in the Northwest Conference (eighth). ... Scored 38 goals, including 12 from Peyton Fullner, and only allowed 16 with strong play in net from Emily Holt. ... Tied with Sedro-Woolley for final 2A district spot after failing to record a win in the final five contests, but tiebreaker rules ended their season short.
Players to watch: Emily Holt (GK, Sr.), Peyton Fullner (F, Jr.), Erin Fiebig (D, So.), Cassidee Barclay (D, Sr.)
Outlook: The Lions defense was strong last year, allowing only 16 goals, which ranked second to Squalicum in the Northwest Conference, and this year will be no different. Coach Carlos Melendez believes he has the best goaltender in the league, “if not the state,” he said in a phone interview. And he’ll also return three of four starters on the back line. Erin Fiebig and Cassidee Barclay will play outside back roles while Lily Bogart and 6-foot-tall freshman Ali VanZanten, who Melendez says has a lot of promise, man the middle. The strong defense will allow the Lions to push forward more, getting last year’s leading scorer Peyton Fullner and the offense more opportunities. “We’re pretty optimistic,” Melendez said. “We strive for nothing less than a postseason berth. I don’t believe Lynden has even made the postseason, and a lot of them know that. We’re not going to settle for anything less.” Height will also be a strength, as Lily Bogart and Elisa Kooiman both near 6 feet along with the tall VanZanten.
