Coach: Joe Gonzalez
Last year: Had the best season in school history, going 12-6-2 overall and 9-2-1 in the Northwest Conference (third). ... Scored 54 goals, led by Jordin Bartel’s 23, while conceding only 22 goals. ... Qualified for the Class 3A District Tournament, where they went 2-2, before falling in overtime to Arlington in a loser-out game.
Players to watch: Christiana Salinas (F, Jr.), Jalissa Somers (D, Sr.), Rachel Neher (GK, So.), Jill Monson (M, Sr.), Kayla Downs (F, Sr.), Katelyn Goode (F, Jr.)
Outlook: The excitement rung out of coach Joe Gonzalez’s voice when he spoke of his team and for good reason. Yes, the Golden Eagles lose stars Carly Bannerman and Jordin Bartel, but they may just return the deepest crop of talent in the Northwest Conference. Christiana Salinas and Kayla Downs bring a ton of speed in the front, while Katelyn Goode will look to fill Bartel’s shoes. In the back Jalissa Somers should continue to be strong, but now as the face of the backline since she was often overshadowed by Bannerman. Jill Monson, as a senior, will anchor the middle along with Katelyn Neher. Rachel Neher showed flashes of promise in net last season and returns. After getting so close to the state tournament last season, Gonzalez is looking for this batch of Golden Eagles to be the first in school history to get to the final tourney. “We look to improve every year,” Gonzalez said in a phone interview. “This year we want to make it to the state tournament and we’re chomping on the bit to get that done.”
