Trazil Lane’s recruitment began as soon as Lummi’s 2014 season ended.

Lane, a dynamic 6-foot-3, 190-pound junior who was selected last year’s Class 1B State Basketball Player of the Year, spent the football offseason debating whether or not he was going to turn out again.

“I was kind of debating it, but I saw they had a bunch of ineligible players and that they needed help,” Lane said. “The Borseys, they were just saying, ‘We need you. We need somebody fast, tall and can catch and hit.’”

Lane was absent from football practice almost two weeks into the season, but finally the Borseys’ persistence paid off.

“It took a lot of convincing,” Raven Borsey said. “He just came out to practice one day. He was the chance we needed to overcome this hill. We had a feeling that eventually he would come out if we kept picking.”

Lummi was certainly happy to have Lane during its 26-20 Class 1B State Playoff semifinal win over rival Neah Bay on Friday, Nov. 27, at the Tacoma Dome.

The gifted junior caught a game-high six passes for 143 yards, including touchdowns of 33 and 57 yards. He also threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Free Borsey.

His play in Lummi’s secondary was paramount, too. His only mistake came on a play-action pass in which he bit hard and allowed a Neah Bay receiver to sneak behind him for a 39-yard score.

But how did Lane respond?

A few plays later he took a shovel pass 57 yards, racing like a blur down the left sideline for a game-changing touchdown.

“It feels great,” said Lane of playing a critical piece in Lummi’s victory. “We have been practicing since day one to beat Neah Bay, and we finally did it.”
