Mount Baker’s pride pushed junior Jed Schleimer past 2,500 yards rushing and the team over 500 points, but there was no magic for the Mountaineers in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A State Playoffs.

In a game in which only the backfield starters ran the ball for both teams, Montesano (10-2) earned a 51-21 win over Mount Baker (10-2) and ended the Mounties’ 10-game winning streak.

Schleimer provided prideful moments in the fourth quarter, which the Mounties entered trailing 37-7, unlike last week’s magic when Baker rallied from a 21-0 first-quarter deficit to outscore Kalama 47-42.

There was obviously no quit in the Mounties, who dented Montesano for two fourth-quarter touchdowns by quarterback Mason Bass and Schleimer, who finished with 239 yards rushing on 27 carries for a remarkable season total of 230 carries for 2,511 yards.

Schleimer and his linemen kept Baker in the game early when he scored on a 19-yard run, breaking several tackles, to slice Baker’s early deficit to 13-7 in the opening period.

But the Bulldogs simply had too much firepower and displayed it to the better end.

Elusive senior Kylar Prante — who caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Jake Herzog on the game’s final play to beat defending state champion Cascade Christian 25-22 — found himself in a different late-game situation this time around.

Prante, still in the game with 2 ½ minutes remaining, capped a night of 15 carries for 265 yards with a 43-yard touchdown sprint against the exhausted Mounties at the 2:25 mark, putting the Bulldogs over 50 points.

Prante also scored on a 54-yard pass from Herzog in the first quarter and a 67-yard run on Montesano’s opening series of the third quarter, providing the Bulldogs with a 31-7 advantage.

Herzog, Logan Truax and Kyle Englund combined for four touchdowns and 125 yards, enabling the Bulldogs to finish with 390 yards on the ground and 156 through the air on Herzog’s 5-for-7 passing, all in the first half.

For Mount Baker, Carson Engholm rushed for 65 yards on 13 carries and Bass finished 6 for 11 passing for 98 yards, giving the Bulldogs 438 total yards.
