Squalicum’s defense shines in win over Anacortes
The Squalicum football team stifled Anacortes’ ground game with a dominating defensive effort in its 56-14 victory over the Seahawks on Friday, Oct. 30, at Anacortes High School.
“It was good to see our guys come out and close our league schedule and finish on a strong note,” Storm coach Nick Lucey said. “We did some things really well.”
Of Squalicum’s eight touchdowns, three were scored on passing plays to junior wide receiver Ben Peterson. Triston Smith scored two rushing touchdowns, and Carlos Hernandez dominated the fourth quarter with the Storm’s final two touchdowns, the last on a 60-yard run.
“It was fun; we were at times really hitting on all cylinders,” Lucey said. “Triston Smith had some great runs, and Ben Peterson obviously did a number of good things. It was fun to see Garrett (Sorenson) distribute as quarterback.”
Anacortes led the game early with a TD on their first possession. A well-executed disguised pass to Carson Buckles left him open to run for a 74-yard touchdown.
The Storm responded with a 24-yard rushing touchdown from Smith three minutes later and then continued to control the field for the rest of the fist half.
Anacortes didn’t earn its second touchdown late in the third quarter. Squalicum’s Bunji McLeod was helped off the field with a game-ending leg injury after the play.
The Storm (9-0, 7-0 NWC 2A/3A) moves in to the postseason and will host either Shorecrest or Lakewood Saturday, Nov. 7, in the Class 2A Northwest District playoffs.
“It’s kind of a hurry up and wait to see who we are getting ready for,” Lucey said. “It’s all about just us and getting ready — just sharpening up what we do —so we’ll see who we are going to play on Tuesday and go from there for next Saturday.”
