The Lyncs ousted the Pioneers at home in a close game, ending with a 35-28 win for Lynden Christian on Friday, Oct. 23, at Nooksack Valley High School.
"We knew that it was going to be a close game because this is two pretty evenly matched teams," Lynden Christian coach Galen Kaemingk said. "We were fortunate that we got a couple touchdowns and got a lead and then we knew they would come back strong, it was just a good hard hitting competitive game and I feel we are fortunate to come out on top."
The Lyncs came out strong with two solid passing touchdowns to Zach Roetcisoender in the first quarter. Zach earned another touchdown in the beginning of the second quarter on a pass from starting quarterback Lucas Roetcisoender,
"Zach made some nice catches," Kaemingk said. "Our sophomore quarterback (Ty Van Dyken), he came in there when Lucas got hurt and did a great job. He threw a touchdown pass and he ran the team and finished the game for us.”
Van Dyken began the second half with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Nate Hielkema.
Nooksack Valley continued to fight through the second half, scoring two more touchdowns to add to their two from the second quarter. Joe McNeeley scored the final touchdown with a 20-yard pass for Nooksack Valley, followed by a safety to finalize the score at 35-28.
"I thought Joe McNeely, our running back, really ran the ball when he caught the ball well," Nooksack Valley coach Robb Myhre said. "Once he caught it he made some nice plays."
Casey Bauman, Nooksack Valley’s quarterback kept busy also playing defense. He made an impressive interception from the defense with two minutes left on the clock in the fourth quarter. Unable to make a first down, Nooksack Valley gave up possession leaving Lynden Christian to run the clock for the win.
"I really wish for our kids that they could have gotten a win there but I thought we fought until the end, which we haven’t necessarily done this season," Myhre said. "We’re not a quitting group but this was a chance they had and I thought they fought until the last second of the game."
Next week, Lynden Christian hosts Mount Baker at 7 p.m. and Nooksack Valley plays Meridian at 7 p.m. at Meridian High School.
