Squalicum shut out Sehome 27-0 on Friday, Oct. 16, at Civic Stadium despite sloppy play from both sides.

Sehome started with the ball on its own 26 and opened with some trickery. Quarterback Jace Rinker handed the ball to Tanner Patrick, who flipped the ball on a reverse to Michael Evans. Evans then floated a pass out to Rinker, who was sprinting down the left sideline uncontested.

Rinker walked into the end zone untouched but looked back to see a flag on the field. An unnecessary block-in-the-back was enforced, and three plays later Rinker coughed up the ball to Squalicum.

It was the first of four turnovers for the Mariners, who seemed deflated after their first play was called back. Coach Bob Norvell said his team needed to make big plays to compete with an undefeated Squalicum unit.

“That stings for us,” Norvell said. “To get one and open up quick would have been fun.”

Even though Squalicum never trailed in the game, it wasn’t without its flaws. The Storm was its own worst enemy, as it tallied 17 penalties for 124 yards and was more often the reason a drive stalled than Sehome’s defense.

“A lot to clean up, but we’ll get it on film Monday and find out what to work on next week,” coach Nick Lucey said.

Squalicum improved to 5-0 in league play and will host Blaine Friday, Oct. 23. Lucey said the Storm need to get back to playing its best game next week, but he insisted that his team did some good things Friday.

“We played pretty darn good defense, and that’s where it really starts,” he said. “Offensively we were getting going but got behind the chains a little bit, so that changed the dimension of our play calls.”

A bright spot for the Storm was quarterback Garrett Sorenson, who threw for 187 yards and a touchdown to to put Squalicum up 7-0. Sorenson threw a 25-yard dart to junior Damek Mitchell, who caught the ball at its peak over a Sehome defender and fell into the end zone for the score.

Sorenson said that after last week’s 12-7 grind out win against Ferndale, it felt good to get back on track.

“To come out and put up 27 points felt good to redeem ourselves,” he said. “Everyone contributed to this win.”
