Burlington-Edison rolls over Blaine

Blaine’s football coaches are going to want to throw out the film on this one.

For the second straight week, the Borderites got off to a slow start. Only this time, things didn’t get better.

Burlington-Edison scored the first 31 points in just 17 minutes and cruised to a 45-21 Northwest Conference victory over Blaine on Friday, Oct. 16.

The Tigers took their first drive 60 yards, capped by a 29-yard pass from Hunter Anderson to Derek Cherryholmes to take the lead and never looked back.

When one thing went wrong for Blaine, another wasn’t far behind. The Tigers got points on their first six possessions, and another on a pick-six.

“I think we all got to look at ourselves in the mirror and everybody try to get better and that includes myself,” Blaine coach Jay Dodd said after the game. “I didn’t do a good job of preparing our football team.”

Anderson threw three touchdown passes in the first half – two to Cherryholmes and another to Conner Moore.

Emerging star Taran Lambert had an electric 89-yard touchdown run to counter Blaine’s only first-half score – a 4-yard pass from Jalen Kortlever to Gunnar Arnason – and Lorenzo Mationg also scored from nine yards out, sending Burlington-Edison into the lockers with a 45-7 halftime lead.

Last week’s star for Blaine, Riley Fritsch was stuffed on nearly every rushing attempt, picking up only six yards on 14 carries.

Instead, backup Garrett Adams got the workload against the Tigers’ second-teamers and made the most of it.

Adams’ first run was a 55-yarder, on his way to a total of 83 yards on just four carries.

“I saw the hole open up and just cut right into it and as I was going I saw my receiver, Anthony Ball, make a key block and cut right off it and ran as hard as I possibly could,” Adams said of the big play.

The run led to an 11-yard touchdown from Kortlever to Ball, who, for the second straight week, made an excellent grab in the end zone.

Adams later got his time in the limelight, as he ran a ball in from 10 yards out late in the fourth.

“I got knocked up at the start but I kept trucking through and got into the end zone,” Adams said of his TD. “For me personally, it was a huge game for my confidence. I feel so much better that my team blocked well for me and came out in the fourth quarter and really pushed.”

Blaine takes on Squalicum next Friday at Civic Stadium, as the Borderites hope to get back on track. At 2-3 in conference play with Lynden and the Storm left to play, though, postseason looks doubtful for Blaine.
