Mount Baker rides another big night from Schleimer to win over LC

The Mount Baker football team defeated Lynden Christian 38-22 on Friday, Oct. 9, behind another big night from junior running back,Jed Schleimer.

Schleimer, the Northwest Conference rushing leader, finished the night with 216 yards on 23 carries, and scored three touchdowns and passed for antoher on homecoming night at Mount Baker High School.

“He’s a tough kid,” Lyncs coach Galen Kaemingk said about Schleimer. “He’s hard to bring down, and he was a lot bigger than I thought he was.”

Meanwhile the Lyncs top running back, junior David Bladies, sat out the game with a deep thigh bruise after a doctor advised him not to play on Wednesday, Oct. 7, according to Kaemingk. He suffered the injury against Nooksack Valley last week.

Without Bladies the Lyncs went down early after Schleimer threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Vadim Kotsyuba off a halfback keeper toss.

The Mountaineers were up 14-0 going into the second, and the Lyncs scored late in the second quarter off a 24-yard touchdown pass from Ty Van Dyken to Jake Poag to cut the lead to 14-7.

But the Mountaineers were able to score quickly after Schleimer broke off a 45-yard run, setting himself up to score from 4 yards out. Mountaineers kicker Jonathan Ehlers kicked a 36-yard field goal as the clock expired to extend Mount Baker’s lead to 24-7 heading into halftime.

Schleimer continued his big night in the fourth, as he scored his third rushing touchdown.

Lynden Christian was able to cut the lead in the fourth to 16 points after a long 80-yard pass from Lucas Roetcisoender to Nate Hielkema.

The Lyncs were inside the Mountaineers’ 5 late in the fourth quarter with an opportunity to cut the lead to eight points, but they were stuffed on the goal line on three straight running plays before having a pass deflected to turn the ball over to the Mountaineers.
