Lynden up to No. 6, Baker No. 5
Lynden bounced back from a Week 1 loss with a dominating 53-0 non-league win over Lakewood last week, and with the victory the Lions jumped two spots to No. 6 in the latest Associated Press Washington State Prep Football Poll.
Quarterback Sterling Somers completed all nine of his pass attempts, threw for two touchdowns and ran for a TD in the win. His backup, Jacob Hommes, came in and picked up right where Somers left off, running for 79 yards on 10 carries and a pair of rushing scores.
The Lions now open Northwest Conference play with an intriguing matchup against Squalicum, which stayed put at No. 7 in Class 2A in this week’s poll. The Storm didn’t play last week, as Meridian forfeited the team’s scheduled game.
Squalicum is coming off a lopsided 41-14 win over Bellingham during Week 1.
Lynden wasn’t the only Whatcom County ranked team to bounce back from a loss. Mount Baker rebounded from its season-opening defeat to Sedro-Woolley with a 69-14 win over Oroville last week.
Running back Jed Schleimer, on nine carries, ran for 227 yards and three scores. The Mountaineers moved up from No. 7 to a tie with Cascade Christian at No. 5. Mount Baker hosts Cascade this week.
Lummi was forced to cancel its game last week against Neah Bay and fell from No. 3 to No. 5 in this week’s poll.
Ferndale was ranked No. 10 last week following an impressive win over Kamiakin, but a 31-28 loss to Oak Harbor last Friday dropped the Golden Eagles from the rankings.
