Mount Baker football bounces back big time

Mount Baker put behind an opening week loss to sting the Oroville Hornets, 69-14.

“We didn’t want to be sloppy, and wanted to be ready to go from the start. … I think we did that tonight,” Mountaineer coach Ron Lepper said.

The Mountaineers were sure ready to go from the start, scoring on their first three possessions in the game’s opening five minutes en route to scoring the first 62 points of the game.

The first touchdown came from the arm of starting quarterback Mason Bass as he hit his cousin T.J. Bass for a 10-yard score.

After that, the Mountaineers relied on a dominant ground attack that ended up with 503 of the 523 total offensive yards.

Leading the way rushing was junior running back Jed Schleimer who made the most of his 8 carries, going for 222 yards and two touchdowns.

“(Schleimer’s) been doing an amazing job. ... he has evolved since last year,” said Mason Bass.

With the game going in the Mountaineers’ favor so quickly, Schleimer was able to turn over his carries to several other capable backs.

“You never know when something can happen… it was nice to get the backups in,” said Lepper.

Sophomore Carson Engholm came away with two touchdowns of his own, on just four carries. Along with that, Jeremiah Cronk, Thomas Barbo, Carson Brandland, William Pilat, and Jonathan Ehlers also scampered into the end zone for the Mountaineers.

The defense largely held Hornet quarterback Nathan Hugus in check, dominating the line of scrimmage on every play as Hugus was forced to throw the ball 38 times and complete just 18 of his passes.

The Mountaineers also blocked a punt, and recovered a fumble.

Mount Baker will return home next Friday to take on Cascade at 7 p.m.
