The Squalicum football team scored four first-quarter touchdowns and rolled to a 41-14 season-opening victory over Bellingham on Friday, Sept. 4, at Civic Stadium.
“I thought we flashed some things that we are capable of,” said Squalicum head coach Nick Lucey. “We have got to get better at executing and doing that over play in play out, but I thought it was a good jumping off point for game one.”
Bellingham fumbled the opening kickoff, and Squalicum recovered and scored its first touchdown two plays later on a 7-yard pass from Garrett Sorenson to Josiah Westbrook. The Storm’s momentum continued through the first half, as they managed to take a 41-0 lead at halftime to start the running clock.
Bellingham avoided the shut out with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter from Isiah Harrington and Ethan Fields.
“I saw big plays kind of all over the field as far as Westbrook, Ben Peterson,” Lucey said. “Garrett Sorenson made some really nice throws, our backs made some nice runs and (Damek) Mitchell — a lot of guys making a lot of plays in that first half.”
Peterson scored two touchdowns — the second coming on a 69-yard run. Darious Powell scored Squalicum’s sixth touchdown.
Westbrook recorded two touchdowns.
After Westbrook’s opening score, Peterson returned a punt for a TD less than two minutes later, and Mitchell bulled his way in for a yard out with five minutes left in the first to make the score 20-0.
“I think, looking at the game, we played fast,” Lucey said. “I thought our guys played with good certainty, knowing what we were doing. I like that a lot. We have obviously got to get better tackling, we have got to eliminate just small mistakes and procedural things.”
