Blaine earns victory to open 2015 season

A balanced offensive attack and big plays lead to a season-opening 55-20 win for the Blaine Borderites over the New Westminster Hyacks of British Columbia.

“We were able to run and pass… the offensive line played great,” said head coach Jay Dodd. Second year starter Riley Fritsch was the steady hand running the ball for the Borderites, rushing for 221 yards and four touchdowns.

Production through the air came from new starting quarterback Jalen Kortlever and his favorite target Anthony Ball. The duo connected just twice, but both went for scores.

The Hyacks weren’t without production though, as quarterback Jamie Shiho found the end zone once in the air and once on the ground.

Receiver David Penalver also struck on a 95-yard kick return for a score in the third quarter, and receiver Michael Thind caught Shiho’s touchdown along with his 151 receiving yards.

But the Borderites dominated the game for the most part, as the defense bent but wouldn’t break and the offensive line controlled the trenches.

“We played well and have lots to improve… tonight’s win was a testament to their work,” said Dodd.

Blaine missed the playoffs last year, but this strong opening performance and the energy, brotherhood, and camaraderie of his teammates has Fritsch excited.

“We expect to be playing the big boys at the end,” said Fritsch.

The only other Borderite to find the end zone was Layton Hagee, who caught a 29-yard strike from Kortlever in the 4th quarter.

The Borderites travel to play Granite Falls at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11.
