‘Thank you Ferndale for the last 4 years ... Now I’m officially a DAWG’

Perhaps the most highly sought after high school football player to come out of Whatcom County since Jake Locker is officially taking the same path as the former Ferndale High and University of Washington signal caller.

Golden Eagles senior standout offensive line prospect Geirean Hatchett signed his national letter of intent with the Huskies at a ceremony Wednesday, Dec. 18, in the FHS lounge, according to tweets by Hatchett and Washington Football.

“Thank you Ferndale for the last four years and all the support!” Hatchett tweeted Wednesday. “Now I’m officially a DAWG.”

Hatchett, who was selected first-team all-state by the Seattle Times this year, checks in at 6-foot-4, 279 pounds, according to a video tweeted by UW celebrating his signing with the words, “Welcome to the pack.” He is one of 21 members of the Huskies’ 2020 recruiting class to sign during the NCAA’s early signing period, according to another UW tweet.

Hatchett was recruited by most major college programs in the country and told The Bellingham Herald as a junior he received more than 30 offers.

Hatchett was a two-way starter for the Golden Eagles since his freshman season — the first lineman to do so under coach Jamie Plenkovich. He was a four-star prospect is expected to play offensive guard, according to 247sports.com, which has him rated the seventh-best offensive guard prospect in the nation, the 204th best prospect overall and the fourth-best in the state.

“Geirean has a real good work ethic. He has a pretty good head on his shoulders,” Plenkovich told The Herald in 2018.

Hatchett actually announced his decision to play at UW last summer with a July 26 tweet, but it wasn’t until Wednesday that he could put pen to paper and make it official.
