Even though it ended in a 32-30 defeat, the Blaine football team played its best game of the year against the top team in the Class 2A Northwest Conference Lakewood Friday.
With five minutes left in the game and trailing by two points, the Borderites had a chance to kick a 30-yard field goal on fourth and one. Blaine coach Jay Dodd opted to go for the conversion, but his team didn’t convert.
“That’s maybe the one decision I wish I had back,” Dodd said. “But we had been moving the ball all night. We just came up a bit short.”
Blaine started an offensive line consisting of zero seniors and two first-time starters, but were still able to have its best offensive output in league play since it scored 35 in a loss to Bellingham three weeks ago.

“This one stings because we were so close,” Dodd said. “I wish we could have won it for the kids.”
