Three Whatcom County football teams saw a bump up in the latest Associated Press Washington State High School Football Poll, released Wednesday, while the county’s other four ranked teams stayed where they were.
A statewide panel of sports writers and editors moved Meridian up four places to No. 5, after the Trojans (3-0) beat previous No. 4 Cascade Christian 34-29 Friday. Nooksack Valley (3-0) also moved up one place to No. 6 following a 55-14 victory over Coupeville last week. Mount Baker (3-0) stayed put at No. 3 behind unanimous No. 1 Royal, after the Mountaineers beat Port Townsend 48-7. The 1A Northwest Conference season kicks off Friday, with Mount Baker at Nooksack Valley and Meridian at Lynden Christian.
Lynden was the other Whatcom County team on the rise, as the Lions (2-1) moved up one spot to No. 3 after a 40-14 2A NWC win over Bellingham. Archbishop Murphy remained a unanimous top pick, while Burlington-Edison checked in at No. 9 and Sedro-Woolley just missed the top 10. Lynden will host the Cubs Friday night.
Ferndale and Squalicum remained at Nos. 4 and 7, respectively in the 3A poll behind top-ranked Eastside Catholic. The Golden Eagles (3-0) beat South Kitsap 55-21 last week and will open 3A Wesco North play when they host No. 10 Arlington Friday, while the Storm (3-0) beat Marysville-Pilchuck 38-28 in its league opener last week and will host Stanwood Saturday.
