Soares leads Mount Baker to district win

The Mount Baker boys’ basketball team won 77-58 over Overlake in the second round of the Class 1A Bi-District Tournament on Thursday, Feb. 18, at Mountlake Terrace.

Timothy Soares led with 26 points for Mount Baker, Grant Balvanz followed with 20 points and Mason Bass added 13.

“Everyone who got on the floor contributed in some fashion,” Mountaineers coach Rob Gray said in a phone interview. “I’m really proud of the energy we played with tonight.”

Balvanz scored 11 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter and contributed eight free throws in a row.

Notable Contribution

Mason Bass came off the bench to score 13 points for the Mountaineers.

Mount Baker will face Lynden Christian in a winner-to-state game at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Mountlake Terrace High School.
