Balvanz leads Mountaineers to win

Mount Baker beat Nooksack Valley 50-32 during a Class 1A Northwest District Tournament elimination game Friday, Feb. 12, in Deming.

“All night long we played great defense,” Mount Baker coach Rob Gray said in a phone interview. “Third quarter came around and we were able to push the lead to 18 and keep it at that the rest of the way.”

Grant Balvanz led the Mountaineers with 18 points, Timothy Soares and TJ Bass scored 11 apiece and the victory gave Gray coaching win No. 200.

The loss ended the season for Nooksack Valley (9-14), and the Baker (15-8) win earned the Mountaineers a bi-district tournament berth.

The Mountaineers will play in a district third-place game against Cedar Park Christian at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13, at Mount Vernon High School.
