Mount Baker takes lopsided loss to King’s

After opening the Class 1A District Tournament with a win against Sultan, Mount Baker’s bid to play for a district title was denied in a major way.

The No. 8 Mountaineers struggled against No. 3 King’s during the district semifinals, taking a 73-34 road loss Wednesday, Feb. 10, at King’s High School in Shoreline.

The 34 points was a season low for the Mountaineers (14-8).

Mount Baker now faces Nooksack Valley in a loser-out game scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at Mount Baker High School. The winner will advance to the 1A Bi-District Tournament.

TJ Bass scored a team-high 12 points, Mason Bass followed with nine and leading scorer Timothy Soares was limited to five points.

The Mountaineers were outscored 24-8 in the first quarter and took a 46-25 deficit into halftime. King’s sealed the game for good by outscoring Mount Baker 21-3 during the third quarter.

King’s was led by Corey Kispert’s and Koa Wilkins’ 15 points, Sam Echelbarger added 12 and Cole Mitchell chipped in 11 during the win.

The win pushed the Cascade Conference champions’ win streak to eight games and up next is a district title match against Lynden Christian at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Mount Vernon High School.
