GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Brandland leads Mounties to victory

Mount Baker won 50-35 over Nooksack Valley on Friday, Jan. 22, in an away conference game.

“We came ready to play,” Mount Baker coach Kim Preston said in a phone interview. “We knew this was going to be a big game for us. I thought we came out and really played as a team.”

Emily Brandland led the Mounties with 18 points, three assists, eight rebound and three 3-point field goals.

Arlissa Oettel with with seven points, nine rebounds and two assists for Nooksack Valley.

Mount Baker hosts Anacortes at 7:15 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25. Nooksack Valley will play Meridian at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at home.

17 Points Ellesse FitzGerald earned for Meridian in their 65-54 loss to Burlington-Edison.

Sehome 42, Blaine 39: Sehome’s Natalie Zender hit a 3-pointer with approximately 30 seconds remaining to make it a two possession game and Blaine couldn’t recover in time in the Mariners’ Northwest Conference victory at Blaine. Zender led the Mariners with 11 points and Maddy Hooker had nine points. Makayah Veliz had 13 points for the Borderites and Josie Deming had eigh points and eight rebounds.

Burlington-Edison 65, Meridian 54: Ellesse FitzGerald led Meridian with 17 points and four 3-point field goals in their loss to Burlington-Edison. Kyrin Baklund followed with 12 points and Ryley Zapien had nine. Edie Breckenridge led Burlington-Edison with 30 points.

Ferndale 56, Bellingham 42: Darrien Camarillo led Ferndale to victory with 18 points, three assists and two 3-point field goals. Emily Benson led with 13 points, four assits and three 3-point field goals for Bellingham.

Anacortes 46, Squalicum 25: Squalicum lost to Anacortes in a conference game on Friday. No other information was reported.

Tulalip Heritage 63, Lummi 11: Jenyha Ell had four points and Chantel Martin had three points and the Lummi Blackhawks lost 63-11 at Tulalip Heritage.

Both teams fought hard. It was a close battle the whole time.
