GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Ferndale sustains early lead to trump the Trojans

Ferndale girls’ basketball came out on top with a 57-54 conference win over Meridian on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

“It was a pretty good game. They got the lead in the second quarter,” Meridian coach Mark Gilmore said in a phone interview. “We just couldn’t get them down, they just hung on. Camarillo had a great game and controlled the tempo for them.”

Darrien Camarillo scored 19 points for Ferndale. Kylie Honrud followed with nine points and Peyton Humbert earned eight.

Meridian was led by Ryley Zapien with 16 points. Kiana Gray had 11 points and 18 rebounds.

Both teams will hit the court again at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22. Meridian will host Burlington-Edison and Ferndale will be at Bellingham.

Lynden Christian 59, Anacortes 42: Sam Van Loo earned 13 points for Lynden Christian in its win against Anacortes, Avery Dykstra followed with 12 points. Haley Hollander scored six points and had eight rebounds. Shaye Brandsma had six points and four assists.

Bellingham 45, Blaine 34: Paige Jacobsen led Bellingham to its first conference win of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Autumn Jacobsen followed with 12 points and Emily Benson scored 11. Blaine was led by Kjirstin Larson with eight points.

Sedro-Woolley 57, Sehome 42: Madison Ulrich had 16 points and three 3-pointers but the Mariners lost the Northwest Conference game at Sedro-Woolley. Samantha Hruby had five rebounds and three assists for Sehome. Samantha Cox led Sedro-Woolley with 17 points.

Grace Academy 53, Lummi 22: Jenyha Ell had eight points in the Lummi Blackhawks’ loss at home to Grace Academy. Chantel Martin added six points and Alison Lawrence had five.

If I was going to highlight somebody, I’d highlight Madison Ulrich. She played her guts out tonight.
