BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Early lead holds for Storm against Pioneers

The Squalicum boys’ basketball team jumped out to a 27-15 lead after one quarter en route to a 76-60 Northwest Conference victory Friday, Jan. 15, at home over Nooksack Valley.

Darious Powell led the Storm with 23 points including five 3-pointers, Giovanni Melley had 16 points and 15 rebounds, Josiah Westbrook added 15 points and Simran Parmar had 13 points.

Connor Beard had 15 points for Nooksack Valley, Casey Bauman added 12 points and eight rebounds and David Flores had 11 points.

Squalicum coach Dave Dickson had high praise for the Pioneers.

“Nooksack played hard the whole game,” Dickson said in a phone interview. “I was really impressed with how they handled themselves.”

Lynden Christian 78, Meridian 37: Lynden Christian point guard Josiah Meppelink scored nine of the game’s first 11 points, and Lyncs extended its perfect start to 14 games with a home league win over Meridian. Jake Poag scored 23 points, and Zach Roetcisoender and Tanner Bouma scored 15 on a night LC shot 11 of 21 from beyond the arc. Brady Moore had 17 for the Trojans.

Anacortes 74, Blaine 59: Anacortes took 77 shots in a 74-59 Northwest Conference victory at Blaine. Shaq Woods led the Borderites with 21 points and 14 rebounds, Jalen Kortlever added 13 points and Ben Adams added nine points. David Rodriguez had 26 points and nine rebounds for Anacortes.

Lummi 52, Providence CC 24: Trazil Lane scored a game-high 18 points and Lummi turned it on in the second half to earn a home league win over Providence CC. The Blackhawks led 16-13 at halftime but outscored Providence 52-24 in the third quarter and 16-2 during the fourth. Lummi coach Jerome Toby highlighted Free Borsey for his strong defensive play.

Jo is very capable of scoring, but he chooses not to because we have so many other weapons. It was his night to be the guy, and he got us off to a strong start.

Up next

Blaine will look to get back on track after losing to Anacortes when the Borderites host nonleague opponent Nathan Hale at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16.
