GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Ferndale leaps ahead in fourth to beat Baker

Tied at halftime and then again after the third quarter, the Ferndale girls’ basketball team raced ahead in the fourth to win 55-43 over Mount Baker.

“Ferndale came ready to play and a lot of credit to them,” Mount Baker coach Kim Preston said in a phone interview. “We are going to learn from this, and we have a lot tougher opponents to face, so we are excited to meet the challenge.”

Emily Brandland led Mount Baker with 17 points, including three 3-pointers, and 11 rebounds. Danielle Tyler followed with 13 points.

Darrien Camarillo scored 23 points for Ferndale.

Ferndale hosts Sehome at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14. Mount Baker will play again at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15, at Burlington-Edison.

Lynden 54, Blaine 29: Jasmyne Neria scored 13 points for Lynden and hit three 3-point field goals in the Lions win over Blaine. Elisa Kooiman followed with 11 points. Josie Deming scored six points and had seven rebounds for Blaine. Makayah Veliz also earned six points.

Lopez 53, Lummi 25: Lummi matched a season high with 25 points and got strong defensive effort from Alison Lawrence and Raeschelle Washington, but it wasn’t enough to get the Blackhawks their first win of the season. Ceona Rabang led Lummi with nine points.

Two top-ranked teams in the state square off in a game that could decide the NWC title when No. 1 Burlington-Edison (Class 2A) travels to face No. 1 Lynden Christian (1A) at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12.
