GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Lyncs cruise to win at Mariners

Sam Van Loo had 16 points to lead the Lynden Christian girls’ basketball team to a 56-28 Northwest Conference victory Friday, Jan. 8, at Sehome.

Haley Hollander and Avery Dykstra had 10 points each for the Lyncs and Isabela Hernandez added eight points.

Lynden Christian improved to 4-0 in conference and 11-1 overall.

Natalie Zender led Sehome with eight points.

“We had a slow start and we can’t have a slow start against a team like Lynden Christian,” Sehome coach Kim Kirk said in a phone interview. “They are a well-rounded team.”

Squalicum 49, Bellingham 37: Chalae Wolters had 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Storm to a Northwest Conference victory at home over Bellingham. Sarah Hulbert added eight points for Squalicum. Kylie Clark and Autumn Jacobsen had eight points each for the Red Raiders.

Lynden 56, Meridian 46: Sierra Smith scored 15 points for Lynden in what her coach described as her best varsity game ever. Elisa Kooiman also scored 15 points and six rebounds. Jasmyne Neria followed with 12 points and two assists.

Tulalip Heritage 67, Lummi 18: Lummi’s Jenyha Ell scored a team-high 10 points, but the Blackhawks found themselves on the wrong end of a lopsided league loss. Lummi was outscored 23-3 during the first quarter. Raeschelle Washington scored six points, and Jayda Phair added two.
