BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Gates sparks Mount Baker to second-half comeback

Junior forward Ethan Gates came off the bench and saw his first significant varsity experience for the Mount Baker boys’ basketball team and gave the Mountaineers the second-half spark they needed to erase a six-point halftime deficit and claim a 53-42 Northwest Conference win at Blaine on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

The 6-foot-9 Gates combined with the 6-10 Timothy Soares and the 6-5 T.J. Bass, and “gave them some matchup problems,” Mount Baker coach Rob Gray said in a in phone interview. Gray finished with seven points.

Bass led the way for the Mountaineers with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Grant Balvanz and Soares each scored 11.

Shaq Woods also had a double-double for the Borderites with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Ben Adams also scored 14, while Marcus Potts finished with 12.

Both teams played hard. They just made more shots than us.
