Balvanz’s big night leads Baker to win

Mount Baker guard Grant Balvanz scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Mountaineers to a 78-63 nonleague win over Sultan on Saturday, Jan. 2, at Sultan High School.

Balvanz scored 20 of his 29 points in the first half and helped the Mountaineers build a 21-5 first-quarter lead.

Timothy Soares contributed 29 points, and TJ Bass chipped in 13 and had 12 rebounds.

“We came out and played hard the first quarter,” Mount Baker coach Rob Gray said in a phone interview. “We weathered the third quarter and basically matched them in the fourth.”
